Digital IoT-Energy-Platform for Real-Time Data

Visualize Energy Data and Use It in Real Time

Consolidate Smart Meter Data into a Central Energy Platform

With the Energy Strategy 2050, the digitization of Switzerland’s energy supply is steadily advancing. By the end of 2027, energy utilities must replace at least 80% of their existing electricity meters with smart metering systems. At the same time, grid operators are required to provide their customers with access to their measured consumption data.

This creates new demands on energy providers’ IT infrastructure. Smart meter data must be continuously collected, processed, and securely made available. At the same time, end customers expect easy access to their consumption data, for example through a modern energy data app or a web portal.

Sitewerk developed a cloud-based energy platform for Eniwa AG that centrally processes smart meter data and makes it available for both an energy data app and a web portal. The solution integrates smart meters, cloud infrastructure, and a user interface into a scalable platform for digital energy management.

Scalable IoT Platform for Processing Smart Meter Data

The solution is based on a modern IoT platform that reliably processes the continuously generated measurement data and makes it available in near real time.

The “PowerBuddy” smart meter reader, developed by Eniwa, reads consumption data directly from the electricity meter. Sitewerk developed the software platform that receives, processes, and makes this data available for various applications.

The architecture consistently separates data collection, data processing, and visualization. This allows large volumes of data to be processed efficiently while simultaneously enabling flexible integration with various front-ends, such as an energy data app, a web portal, or future applications.

Energy Data App and Web Portal for End Customers

The Energy Data app we developed provides easy access to current electricity consumption data. It is available for iOS, Android, and as a browser-based web application.

Through the app, users can view their smart meter data in near real time and visualize their energy usage. In addition to current electricity consumption, historical trends, peak loads, and changes in energy consumption can be clearly displayed.

The app accesses the same central platform as the web portal. This ensures that all data remains consistent and can be accessed regardless of the device used.

Benefits of a Digital Energy Platform for Energy Providers

The platform we have developed helps energy utilities efficiently deliver digital services and monetize smart meter data.

The benefits include, among others:

  • centralized processing of large volumes of smart meter data
  • scalable cloud architecture for future growth
  • standardized interfaces for integrating existing systems
  • provision of data for energy data apps, web portals, or other applications
  • near real-time processing of measurement data
  • modular expandability for additional digital services

This creates a flexible platform that goes far beyond simply visualizing electricity consumption.

Challenges in Developing an Energy Data Platform

One of the biggest challenges was processing high-frequency smart meter data. The meter readings are generated continuously and must be reliably received, processed, and made available for various applications. At the same time, it was necessary to ensure that performance remained stable even as data volumes increased and that the information was available in the Energy Data app in near real time. The platform was therefore designed with a scalable cloud architecture. Standardized interfaces enable the easy integration of additional systems and lay the foundation for future expansions.

Scalability of the platform for future energy services

The solution we’ve developed forms the technological foundation for future digital energy offerings. In addition to visualizing consumption data, other applications can be integrated in the future — such as photovoltaic systems, battery storage, heat pumps, dynamic electricity rates, or smart-home systems. Thanks to its modular architecture, the platform can be continuously expanded without affecting existing functions. In this way, the solution is evolving from an energy data application into a central digital platform for data-driven energy services and modern energy management.
